Sonoita Real Estate

The communities of Sonoita and Elgin, Arizona are located at crossroads of two scenic state highways 82 and 83. Most county roads are unpaved. The community is located about 4,970 feet above sea level. The nearest full-service airport is Tucson International, located approximately 45 miles away.

Sonoita and Elgin have been wine capitals of Arizona ever since mission grapes were first brought to the region 400 years ago by early Spanish missionaries for religious purposes. Today, one vintner in the area still grows mission grapes as a homage to these early xenophiles. Western filmmakers have also been seduced by the area, making it the setting for such films as "Oklahoma," "Red River," "Tin Cup," "The Young Guns," "The Fantasticks," and the television show, "The Young Riders."

Ranching in the area began in the late 1800s when railways were established. At the height of the cattle industry in the area, over 3,000 head of cattle were shipped back east. Today much of the area consists of ghost settlements and abandoned mines, but the areas where the wineries are located attract more tourists, so bed and breakfasts, small restaurants and gift shops run by local artisans thrive. Two of Arizona's top 100 restaurants are also located here.

Today the railroads no longer run through Sonoita, but a number of cattle and goat ranches as well as horse properties still exist. Patagonia, Sonoita and Elgin are home to many wineries, wildlife preserves, and parks, making it a great place to spend the day outdoors. Patagonia lake, the Empire Cinega National Conservation Area, and the Arizona trail offer just a few of the things to do in the area, along with museums, shops and of course, the winery tours.

Agricultural and farming businesses make up the largest employment sector of Sonoita, with government services in the area coming in second. Homes there range from classic ranch to contemporary Santa Fe style and modular homes. Most are on more than one acre of land. There are few housing developments, since most of the homeowners here are also landowners.

The community is very active, since the population is only around 1,100. Boasting a chamber of commerce, a web site, and many local events, such as the Santa Cruz county fair, wine festivals, walking tours of local studios, and an annual rodeo. Sonoita is also a haven for local artists, featuring gift shops with original pottery, paintings and other crafts.

School aged children are served by Elgin Elementary School, serving grades K-8. High School students attend Patagonia Union High School. In addition, there are two other private options: Harvest Christian Academy in Sonoita and Montessori School in Patagonia.
