Located 75 miles southeast of Tucson, Sierra Vista serves as the main commercial, cultural and recreational hub of Cochise County. The city is easily accessible for those wishing to drive or fly in. It is a short drive from Interstate 10 on State Highway 90 with a scenic view of the mountains and grasslands. For those wishing to fly in, Sierra Vista has its own municipal airport. This thriving community of nearly 45,000 residents is the regional center of southeastern Arizona and the home of historic Fort Huachuca.
At an elevation of 4,623 feet surrounded by mountain peaks reaching nearly 10,000 feet, Sierra Vista enjoys a moderate four-season climate with abundant sunshine. The annual high average is 74.4 degrees with 49.8 degrees for the low temperature. June is the hottest and driest month with an average high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Sierra Vista's mild climate is coveted around Arizona.
Sierra Vista is a high-desert town surrounded by picturesque mountains. They are the Huachuca Mountains, the Mule Mountains, the Whetstone Mountains, and the Dragoon Mountains. The higher elevation means the climate here is cooler than Tucson and Phoenix. The city is adjacent to the the San Pedro River.
Recently ranked by Vacation Publications as one of the top 100 places in America to retire, Sierra Vista is also attracting a growing number of families and professionals looking to take advantage of the numerous opportunities in this part of Southern Arizona. Many of those opportunities are made possible through the presence of historic Fort Huachuca, home to the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Network Enterprise Technology Command. The largest employer in Sierra Vista is Fort Huachuca.
The retired community accounts for nearly one-fourth of the population. Winterhaven is an age-restricted, gated community of single family homes. Winterhaven is built bordering an 18-hole golf course which is located in Country Club Estates. Winterhaven has built over 100 single-family homes at the present time and has just recently opened additional phases.
There are many recreational opportunities for residents: tennis, racquetball, indoor/outdoor pools, weight-lifting equipment, aerobics, etc. Sierra Vista has an indoor wave pool facility available to the public. There are two 18-hole golf courses: Pueblo del Sol a georgeous, well-maintained course positioned within the Country Club Estates community of single-family homes; and the Mountain View Course--a reasonably priced, public course. The course is located on Fort Huachuca, but is accessible and operated by the city. Other nearby golf courses include Turquoise Valley, San Pedro, del Lago Golf Course, and Kino Springs. Golf is a year-round activity here!
Of course there is plenty to do for non-golfers: The city offers activities Veterans' Memorial Park such as Festival of the Southwest, Art in the Park, Octoberfest, and an evening summer series that includes blues, jazz, pop and rock ensembles. Residents can enjoy symphony orchestra performances, ballets, contemporary bands, theater productions and special events at the Buena Performing Arts Center.
There are six public elementary schools, three junior high schools (one military), and one high school. More than 2,700 students attend the local branch of the community college, Cochise College. Several colleges and universities - including local branches of University of Arizona, the University of Phoenix, Wayland Baptist University, and Western International University, offer upper-division and/or graduate courses.
