As the housing market soared in 2005, first-time homebuyers were desperately searching for a way to own a nice home without breaking the bank. The solution for many was to head to communities on the outskirts of Tucson where they could have a home in a nice, quiet neighborhood and still be somewhat close to work. Given the fact that nearly 1,800 people commute to work from Tucson to Phoenix every day, developments north of town and close to I-10 have an audience with those who'd like to keep their commute short.
The first development in Red Rock began in 2006, and it consisted of nearly 4,000 homes. The complex includes an elementary school, an aquatics center, over 11 miles of trails, a community park and several smaller parks. There are also baseball and softball fields, volleyball courts, a soccer field and a skate park. In addition, the developer worked with the Anza Foundation to build the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. The trail commemorates the nearly 1,200 miles that Spanish settlers traveled over the first overland route that connected San Francisco with New Spain.
The homes in this area are Spanish-style stucco with tile roofs, and smaller, desert landscaped yards. Students in this area go to Red Rock elementary and middle schools, but Santa Cruz high. The developer has donated land for two more schools on the site. Currently, only the "Village" portion of Red Rock is open, meaning many more developments are coming. This means more shopping, entertainment and services won't be far behind.
Even though Red Rock is well north of Tucson, as the city expands Northwest, it means places to go and things to do are just down the highway. That includes shopping such as Foothills Mall, Kohl's, and a Wal-mart Supercenter and Fry's grocery store, several restaurants, and two golf courses. There's also movie theatres, state parks and water parks nearby. Plus, close proximity to I-10 means wherever else you want to go is easy to get to as well.
