Rancho Vistoso is located in the northern section of Oro Valley at the top of what's known as Pusch Ridge, named after the German farmer George Pusch who once owned most of this land as his ranch. It was widely known as "steam pump ranch" because it contained one of only two steam-powered water pumps in what was then the Arizona Territory.
Today, this master-planned community designed by Del Webb is a sprawling complex of Santa Fe-style tract homes intermixed with larger custom homes and gated communities. Golf courses snake throughout the neighborhoods, adding green to the natural desert landscape and sharing the beauty between all the communities. Running trails, sidewalks and park abound, making the morning commute one to be had on not only the streets but the sidewalks as well. The hills in this area remind one more of Utah than Arizona, and they afford magnificent views to even the most modest of houses.
Although Rancho Vistoso and Oro Valley are situated outside of greater Tucson, access into town is made easy by taking Tangerine out to I-10, or Oracle Road right into the heart of town. The recent widening of Oracle Road has recently made the trip even easier. The community is within miles of Northwest Medical center -- a brand-new facility in the area -- the Hilton El Conquistador, with its nationally rated golf courses, a medical park, and several grocery stores and more planned for the area soon.
You're also less than an hour away from both the Mt. Lemmon recreation area and Catalina State Park, both of which help provide the area with it's amazing scenery. "The best part of living in Oro Valley is the stunning view of the Catalina Mountains from my patio and almost every where I go within the town limits," says Barb Sherman, who teaches yoga in Oro Valley and resides in Rancho Vistoso. "I like the feeling of living in the beautiful Sonoran desert and yet close to shopping and medical facilities. I am also minutes away from great hikes in Catalina State Park."
Rancho Vistoso seems to enjoy slightly cooler temperatures as more rainfall than does Tucson, which allows you to be outside and enjoy the desert atmosphere more often. Oro Valley residents also enjoy a farmer's market put on each Saturday at the community center, a Christmas parade each year, along with such events as the Musical Magic for Kids performances each winter, the Oro Valley Festival of the Arts, the annual Independence Day Celebration, and a commission for public arts.
