Picture Rocks, AZ Real Estate

The Picture Rocks area, along with Marana, was inhabited by native peoples for several thousand years before becoming an important center for agriculture late in the 19th century. Since then, it's flourished due to its abundant resources and accessibility to the city. In 1964, President Kennedy designated over 15,000 acres near Picture Rocks as national forestland, and Saguaro National Park West, which butts up to much of the land in Picture Rocks, was born.

While Marana represents the more urban side of Northwest Tucson, Picture Rocks is the more laid back, country, side. Here you'll find old dive bars and feed stores, guest ranches and neighbors who know you by name. That's part of the charm for resident Amy McFarland. "My family and I came from a very small town in Ohio and Picture Rocks is very similar to that community. We go to the local store, and they know us by first name and always ask how our family and friends are doing. My dad has a routine of going there every morning for the same few items, and they always have his groceries waiting and his total ready before he gets there," she says.

The two large peaks the area is named after don't quite climb high enough to be mountains, but are just too picturesque to be called hills. They create a beautiful view, privacy and quiet for the residents here, and provide the backdrop for some of the most amazing sunsets you'll ever see in the Southwest. Picture Rocks shares Marana's Unified School District, so great schools are nearby with excellent facilities. The district has a brand-new web site that enables you to report an absence, check grades, schedule a conference and many other things without ever picking up the phone.

You'll find most of the homes in Picture Rocks to be sprawling and spread out, unlike the new development in the city limits, where land is more scarce. Once you cross over those big outcroppings, land is one thing there is no shortage of. Stucco is still favored out here due to termites and intense sun in the summertime, but more traditional structures abound, as many houses are custom homes or modular structures.

Being so close to Marana means taking part in all the great community activities, such as the huge Fourth of July celebration, and the programs the Art Council puts on, and yet you retain the privacy and ruggedness of life in the country. Picture Rocks residents enjoy several wilderness trails, several nearby attractions, such as Saguaro National Park West, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Old Tucson Studios and the International Wildlife Museum, as well as horseback riding and four wheeling on the various trails and hiking paths. Living in Picture Rocks is truly the best of city and country living!
