Bisbee, 90 miles southeast of Tucson and nestled amongst the Mule Mountains, is the picturesque county seat of historic Cochise County. The community was founded in 1880 and named after Judge DeWitt Bisbee, a financial backer of the Copper Queen Mine. The city is approimately 82 miles southeast of Tucson. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates, the city has over 6,200 residents.
The small town's legacy has long been preserved not only in its architecture and mining landscape, but is world-renowned for its diverse minerals and wealth of copper. Although its mines closed in the 1970s, a museum has welcomed, educated and entertained more than a half-million visitors ever since.
Today Bisbee has evolved into an attractive artist colony and retirement community, known for its relaxed quality of life. Travelers from all over the world come to Bisbee to savor its unique charm... an uncommon blend of creativity, friendliness, style, romance and adventure — all wrapped in the splendor of the Old West. The most popular activity in Bisbee is the Queen Mine Tour, a trip down into the now inactive copper mine. A must for history buffs is a visit to the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, the West’s first rural Smithsonian Institute affiliate.
Today, the original city of Bisbee is known as "Old Bisbee," and is home to a thriving downtown cultural scene. Old Bisbee is also noted for its architecture, including its Victorian houses and elegant Art Deco courthouse. The town's hilly terrain is exemplified by the old three-story high school: each floor has a ground-level entrance.
The majority of Bisbee houses date from the heyday period of the mines from 1890 to 1920. Because of this, the visual appearance of Bisbee can best be described as "antique" or "charming". The Bisbee buildings are crowded onto the hillsides, and are angled up steps, propped up on stilts, ranging in size. Each building reveals individual charm or a few details unique to Bisbee homes. Some of the houses are historical jewels, complete with grand pillared fireplaces, chandeliers and spacious ballrooms.
School-aged children are served by schools of the Bisbee Unified School District. This district includes a primary school serving grades PK through 3 and a middle school for grades 4-7. Students in grades 7 and 8 are served by Lowell School, while high school students attend Bisbee High School.
